The WAX staff was delighted to hear that that group show ‘Fixed Variable,’ which recently opened at Hauser & Wirth’s Chelsea location, features artwork from five WAX contributors, including Letha Wilson, featured in WAX 4, and John Houck, Lucas Blalock, Chris Wiley, and Ethan Greenbaum, who’s artwork is featured in WAX 5.
As described by the curators, “‘Fixed Variable’ looks at the work of eight artists who explore the tension between the photograph and the object, in light of the new and complex ways that we experience images in contemporary visual culture: mediated by the computer, corrupted by Photoshop, unnoticed and ingrained in the urban landscape.
These works are not about the content of the photograph. They concern themselves with the codes and gestures by which the photograph can be made and altered. After breaking the photograph down, each image is reconstructed, giving the medium itself renewed agency and opportunity.”
